The producers of Hawkes Bay’s Christmas at the Park have announced their lead act for 2024. Stellar will front the Christmas Concert planned for the 7th of December at the MITRE 10 Sports Park, Hastings.
“Christmas at the Park will be the perfect place for Stellar to get-set for their upcoming 25-year anniversary of their debut album tour,” says event Organiser David Trim of Kaisen Charitable Trust.
The 3-venue anniversary tour will play Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch early next year where they will perform all songs from the celebrated album Mix. With their string of massive radio hits, conspicuous flame-haired singer, Boh Runga, and major label backing, Stellar exploded into the national spotlight in 1995.
The Mix album – produced by Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey - reached Number 1 in New Zealand’s album chart, sold 75,000 copies (5x Platinum) and charted for a staggering 42 weeks. At the subsequent NZ Music Awards, stellar won 7 Tui awards. The album catapulted them on to a 9-date tour across Australia and New Zealand with Alanis Morrisette and Garbage; as well as their own sold out headline shows.
Their next two albums Magic Line and Something Like Strangers – also reached the NZ Top 10 - securing the band’s status as innovative blenders of electronic sounds, rock, and hook-laden melodies.
Since reforming in late 2017 to perform Maxine at the NZ Music Awards as a tribute to Hall of Fame inductee Sharon O’Neill, the band has toured the country and played major festival dates alongside Billy Idol, Shihad, the feelers, Dave Dobbyn, LAB and more.
This is the 17th Year that Property Brokers Christmas at the Park has entertained our community with Christmas spirit and all-round family entertainment that has remined free to enter. The event attracts 13-15,000 people each year and alternates between Napier and Hastings, year on year.
This year’s event will be held on the fields at The Mitre 10 Sports Park. Other entertainment lined up includes an hour of Christmas carols, local artists and bands, and the unique signature pyrotechnics display, which has become one of the most popular parts of the event.
It takes two hundred volunteers to produce and run the evening, with many community groups such as Rotary, Lions, churches and schools all adding to the experience. This year the Air Training Cor will be involved running a confidence course for the children.
Several businesses donate some of their staff for the day of set up to help as part of their company’s social interaction plans. “Napier Port lend us forklift drivers and Hawke’s Bay Roofing Solutions bring their whole team for the Friday set up. Such a big help in getting the event ready” Trim said
“This is a great way for people from all over Hawke’s Bay to gather together and celebrate Christmas as a community. The event was one of the first of this size to be smoke free and alcohol free.” Trim said.
Picnics are welcomed, however glass is prohibited as the event is held on the sports park.
